Alaska: Gifts of a Wild Land

7 minute short film by Lindsay Carron 2021

Alaska is a place beyond words. And its people reflect the essence of the land and waters in their daily actions. This short film is a compilation of video clips I have captured on my phone from various locations around Alaska – Kodiak Island, Kuskokwim River, Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, Yukon River, Fort Yukon, Selawik, amongst others from 2016-2019. These candid moments with people like Julie Mahler and May Walton share a quick glimpse into the beauty and wisdom I have witnessed in Alaska’s people, and the honor it is to share it in my artwork. Enjoy.

Bernadette Demientieff, Gwichyaa Gwich’in. “Heart of Caribou”

Ink and colored pencil on paper 30×43″ 2021

When I first sat down with Bernadette in 2017, our conversation made me laugh, cry and feel sisterly love. Bernadette is connected to her heart, her land, her people and her humanness. She spares no time in getting real, and this vulnerability translates into power as she relays an unwavering message to people around the world: The Arctic Refuge is Sacred Land. The calving grounds of the Porcupine Caribou are not to be violated. There will be no oil drilling here. Bernadette’s will, alignment with the land and animals’ needs, and dedication to not only her people, but all people, is what I aimed to convey in this portrait. Thank you to Bernadette for sharing her voice, stories and heart.
